Why did you pick this particular area: Over the last decade, technical developments and the emergence of large amounts of data have created a fertile environment for machine learning. Various applications that integrate automated learning and reasoning are pervasive in our daily life. Companies such as Amazon and Google have been applying machine learning to matching products with customers, filtering out spam e-mails and optimizing ad efficiency. In the medical field, machine learning has been used in predicting the course of incurable diseases based on the large number of empirical cases and scores of seemingly unrelated factors. In finance, machine learning has been used to model stock prices, interest rates and other economic phenomena. Given this vast domain of applications, machine learning is an exciting area of research and its progress has and will continue to change the way we interact with the world.
Why did you choose Tufts CS: I was looking for a PhD program that could offer exciting research projects with real life applications. I was interested in a small department which would foster closer interactions between the professors and the students. Tufts CS stands out in both aspects.
