Professor Jacob Comments on User Interfaces on New Scientist blog

On January 9, 2012, Professor Rob Jacob was quoted in a blog on the "Death of the TV remote control" on Peter Nowak’s New Scientist blog.

"When you have thousands of channels and thousands of options, the interface is a lot harder than it used to be," Professor Jacob told Nowak. "Just for watching TV, interfaces have gotten too complicated."

The trend with all electronics is toward "reality-based interfaces" that duplicate natural actions, rather than requiring users to learn new ones. In virtual reality, for example, "if you want to see the view to your right you don't press alt-control-right-arrow, you just turn your head." Motion-controlled televisions will only succeed if they can get this right, Jacob said.

Professor Jacob also commented on television user interfaces in an interview on "Spark", a CBC radio show. Listen in at minute 6:30 for his comments.
