Entity-relationship model

  • Structures data in an intuitive way.
  • Used early in the process of gathering requirements and planning a system.
  • Starting point for the logical design of any database system.
  • Does not address how data is accessed or maintained.

Entity

A thing that is important for your application.

Examples

  • A person
  • A profile
  • A product that can be purchased on an e-commerce website
  • A review of that product
  • An order containing that product
  • The shipment of that product
  • A phone call
  • The cell phone originating the phone call

Pretty much anything you talk about.
