- How do I become a CSEMS scholar?
Fourteen first year students are selected annually to join the program,
with the exception of 2002-2003 when an additional set of sophomores
were also selected to jump start the program. First years students
continue with the program into the second year provided that they
maintain good academic standing within the University.
- What do I have to do as a CSEMS Scholar?
- Meet with your designated CSEMS advisor on monthly basis.
- Attend the CSEMS Scholars bimonthly meetings. These meetings
will alternate between formal seminars about technical topics
or informal meetings to help you learn about Tufts resources
and be successful in your major. The seminars will be held on
designated Wednesdays from 11:50 a.m. - 1:20 p.m. (a
University-wide free period in your schedule).
- Accept the mentoring of one or two advanced students who will
act as peer mentors. The mentors will share their Tufts
experiences and encourage you to stay within the discipline.
You would establish a collegiate relationship with them during
the Scholars meetings or see them during one-on-one interactions
as needed.
- Complete surveys that will be administered at the beginning,
middle, and end of the school year, and be interviewed
occasionally to assess the CSEMS Scholar program at Tufts.
- Accept to act as a peer mentor during your second year in the
program.
- How can I be added to the CSEMS maling list?
Just click on the join the email list link in the
left navigation bar, and enter your email address.
- Can I keep the CSEMS scholarship AND my work-study position?
"Work-study" money is federal money. "CSEMS" money is also federal
money. You cannot have more federal money than your "financial need"
under federal guidelines. Therefore the CSEMS grant funds can only
replace other monies within your Tufts need-based financial aid package, and not represent an overall increase in that financial aid package. Because we
believe that it is advantageous for students not to need to work in
their first two years, we will replace the work-study allocation first
and use the remainder to reduce the loan, unless the CSEMS Scholar
specifically requests otherwise. This does not mean that you
cannot work. As long as you remain academically successful, you can
accept other term-time employment, but it may no longer be a
"Work-Study" federally subsidized position.
