Abstract

The advent of the Internet has opened a new era, in which we are anticipating another industrial revolutionary with characteristics of intrinsic improvement in productivity and reduction in cost. Communication emerges as an enabling technology of the new economy. Fiber optics is the most robust, lowest cost per bit, highest- capacity terrestrial communications technology known to meet the bandwidth demand. The market for optical communications components has seen unprecedented growth during the past few years and offers excellent long-term growth prospects.
