Abstract

Thin film electrochromic “smart” windows and thin film high energy/power densities (per volume and per mass) are closely related thin film electrochemical devices that have much promise for helping the U.S., if not the world, attain a solar economy and a healthier environment. The physical principles and the practical realizations of these devices will be discussed, with an emphasis on: (a) some of identified key design and fabrication problems; (b) some achieved solutions to those problems; and (c) some remaining problems needing solution, together with current strategies being pursued to solve them.
