Abstract

How can we help people become more creative problem solvers or designers? Artificial Intelligence research focused on creating creative computer programs can provide some clues. As an AI researcher in the 1990's, I worked on several projects aimed at understanding processes behind creative reasoning. As a learning scientist in the 1990's and 2000's, I worked on a project aimed at helping people learn to reason scientifically. In this talk, I bring the two together -- using what I learned about creative reasoning and what I learned about how to help people learn to propose ways of promoting creativity in people. I suggest a pedagogical approach and several types of software resources to support it -- a special type of simulation and modeling system and a special type of case library.
