Course Description

Computer Science 250-01 Affective Interfaces. This is a seminar course exploring new forms of human-computer interaction that use their user's affective or emotional state as part of the input. Students will read research papers in this area and other related disciplines and present and discuss them in the seminar. We will explore the use of a variety of technologies to measure affect, including functional near-infrared spectroscopy work at Tufts. We will then explore ways to use such measurements as input to new forms of "implicit" or passive user interfaces. The course will also connect to our current research in brain-computer interfaces, passive measurement of physiological and brain states, and interfaces that use brain input to drive subtle adaptation. Prerequisite: Background in human-computer interaction, cognitive science, psychology, physiological or brain measurement techniques, or other relevant topic area; or permission of instructor.
