EE128 Operating Systems

Fall Semester 1998

This course will introduce Operating Systems concepts and students will have the opportunity to investigate the UNIX operating system.

Tentative Schedule:

  1. History of Operating Systems, Architecture Review
  2. Processes
  3. Critical sections and Semaphores
  4. Process Scheduling, Memory Management
  5. File system
  6. Deadlocks, Unix Structure
  7. Distributed Systems
  8. Scripting languages such as PERL
  9. TCP/IP protocol, shared file systems (NFS) and sockets
  10. Visit on Computer Security from the FBI

Homework: There will be problems assigned from the text. All assignments and labs will be psoted on the web stie EVERY TUESDAY. It is your responsibility to check the web site for the assignments and the laboratory assignments. Extra hardcopies will also be available in the main office. The solutions to the homework will be placed in a book in the EE office a week after the due date. Normally, no late homework will be accepted for a grade after the solutions have been posted in the EE office. All assignments should be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date. If you can not make it to class, you must have your assignment dated an eecs staff person before putting it in the T.A.'s mailbox.

Lab: There will be five or six programming lab assignments. The programs will be written in the C or C++ language and will help develop your UNIX shell programming skills. You are encouraged to work on these assignments while the TA is on duty.

Quizzes: There will be announced quizzes. There will be no make-ups on quizzes. The best 5 quiz scores will be used.

Examinations: There will be two exams. EXAM 1: Tuesday October 20, 1998 in class. The Final exam will be given on the date according to the university schedule.

If you have any question about your grade on an exam, you will submit a written description and submit it to me with your exam.
