Karen Panetta

Dr. Karen Panetta received her B.S. in Computer Engineering from Boston Univeristy, M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering from Northeastern University. She worked full-time for Digital Equipment Corporation as a Principal Engineer while completing her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. She worked on many CPU design teams and developed simulation engines for fault simulation of digital logic systems. In 1991, Karen was selected as a Digital Fellow for the Engineers Into Education Program. This awesome program allowed her to go to school full time, with full salary for two years to finish her Ph.D. disseration. She is the recipient of the NSF CAREER AWARD and is a NASA Research Scientist Fellow. She is currently working on the "Nerd Girls": Breaking the Stigmas and Stereotypes of Women in Engineering project.

Armed with industry experience and a dislike for snoots, Karen joined the Tufts faculty with a mission:

  1. To prepare students for the real world and to treat them like professionals.

  2. Get students to forget Grade Point Averages and become team players rather than cut throats and whiners. Her moto: "Graduate and I'll find you a job." (Note: 1998 salaries of her students: B.S.: low $47k high: $52k. M.S.:low: $55k high: $67k.)

  3. Get students to give her as much free fudge as possible.

She currently teaches core computer engineering courses and is developing the multimedia curriculum at Tufts. Karen likes cute fuzzy animals (alive please). Her bunny Hannah Jumper can't jump anymore because Karen also likes to feed cute fuzzy animals.
