IFIP Working Group 2.8

The next meeting will be in the Historic Inns of Annapolis in Maryland, USA.  The historic inns are comprised of three different buildings all located within a short walk of historic Annapolis and the state capitol building of Maryland.  The meetings are likely to take place in the Maryland Inn, but the sleeping rooms will be drawn from all three inns (the Maryland Inn, the Governor Calvert House, and the Robert Johnson House).

Annapolis, Maryland, USA

November 4-9, 2012

Book your room directly with the Historic Inns, either by phone +1-410-263-2641 or 1-800-847-8882 or by email reservations@historicinnsofannapolis.com.  Please make it clear that you are part of the Working Group 2.8 to get the negotiated room rate of $129/day (plus taxes) and to be credited to our room block (which helps pay for the meeting space).  Please make your reservation no later than October 5.  After that, we cannot guarantee that there will be space in the hotels.

The registration fee for the meeting will be included as an additional charge on your hotel bill, payable when you check out.  The registration fee covers breakfast and lunch for Monday through Friday; dinners for Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; and fees to cover the room rental and A/V charges.  The estimated cost for five nights of hotel accommodation and the registration fee is $1300, although the costs may vary slightly.  The hotel may ask for a deposit equivalent to one night’s lodging when you make your reservation.

Please send mail to kathleen.fisher@gmail.com if you have any dietary restrictions so we can pass then on to the hotel catering service.

Parking is available at an additional charge of $24/night.

The meeting program is decided dynamically, and slots are flexible to allow discussions to run their course, varying in length from about 30 to about 50 minutes.  Our (slightly unusual) practice is to allocate half the time to prepared material from the speaker and half to discussions and questions from the audience, so please come with 15-25 minutes' worth of prepared material on some aspect of your latest research.  In general, more focused talks tend to work better.

The closest international airport to Annapolis is Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI).  It is also possible to fly to Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) or to Reagan National Airport (DCI), although these airports are further away and are the wrong side of Washington DC, with negative consequences for traffic.

Shuttle service to the Historic Inns from either BWI or the BWI Amtrak Station may be arranged through Go Airport Shuttle, either via the website, by calling 1-800-776-0323 or +1-410-381-2772, or by email

The one-way rate from either BWI Airport or the BWI Amtrak Station to the Historic Inns is $38 for a shared ride in a van or $114 for a single rider.

We will be going to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC for the Wednesday afternoon excursion.   A bus will pick us up close to the Historic Inns in Annapolis at 1pm and take us to the Air and Space Museum.   Admission to the Air and Space Museum is free (as is admission to the rest of the museums that comprise the Smithsonian Institute, which are mostly located in walking distance).  You are free to go to any of the museums that strike your fancy.

Dinner will be at 6pm at B. Smith’s, which is located at the east end of Union Station.  You are responsible for making your way from the Smithsonian to the restaurant.  It’s about a 20 minute walk.  A map that shows the location of the two locations is available.

The bus will pick us up at 8pm from the restaurant to take us back to Annapolis.

The cost for the excursion is $110, which includes both dinner and transportation.  Instructions on how to pay this fee are available here.
